PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- New evidence in the case of an illegal Chinese immigrant convicted of killing a fellow inmate at Clinton Correctional Facility more than 16 years ago will be heard by a judge this month.
David Wong, currently held at Shawangunk Correctional Facility, was sentenced to 25 years to life for the 1986 stabbing death of Tyrone Julius. Wong, who was in prison at the time of the killing for armed robbery, has denied responsibility.
The David Wong Support Committee, a group that has been trying to exonerate Wong for more than 10 years, will be in Clinton County Court April 10 and 11 for the evidentiary hearing.
Wong was convicted in 1987 on the testimony of two witnesses, one of whom later recanted. Julius' widow has signed an affidavit stating that another man, Nelson Gutierrez, killed her husband. Gutierrez was released from prison in 1994 and died a few years later in the Dominican Republic.
