David's statement
I am feeling very lucky and grateful that I am finally free at last from the teeth of the racist criminal "justice" system, and the racist and inhumane immigration practices and policies of the U.S. I have safely landed in Hong Kong. I am presently happy and comfortable at home and enjoying time with my mom, my two sisters and their families. I would like to thank all my friends, supporters, relatives in the U.S., and the People's Republic of China Consulate in New York for making my freedom and homecoming a reality. I would not be home and free today without their wonderful effort, help, support and dedication for all those years.
I am free from the grasp of the racist U.S. prison industrial complex, but after so many years of absence, I will need some time to reacquaint with things and people here and to contemplate my future. However, I am feeling good and excited about the opportunities and the possibilities here because now I am truly free in my "own" country that is increasingly prosperous and stable. Nevertheless, I am also feeling regret and sadness for leaving all my friends and supporters in the U.S., especially knowing that I may never be able to see some of them again or meet them. But I will never forget their kindness and goodness extended to me through all those years. I will try to use every opportunity presented to me to share my experience in the U.S.; the wonderful friends and supporters I met, the kindness and goodness they gave me, and their sense of justice and fairness.
I will also tell people about the racism and inequality in the U.S., the plight of the Native Americans, people of color, and political prisoners. I will not forget to warn people about the hypocrisy of some Americans and the American government: their objective and intention is to use human rights and democratic ideas to destabilize every region of the world and governments to further their racist and imperialistic objectives and interests.
I will miss my friends and supporters dearly. They have been so wonderful and like a family to me throughout those years and have been my strength and hope in my struggle for freedom. I could not make it through my ordeal without their love, support, and help. They will continue to be my hope and inspiration in my life. I will keep them close in my heart always. I know I can never thank them enough for all that they did and do for me. Nevertheless, I want to say thanks to them once again and I will be forever grateful to all of them. I want to specially thank Yuri Kochiyama and the late Bill Kochiyama and their family for being there for me from the very beginning of my ordeal. They started the support committee for me and worked so hard to spread the word about my case and to gather support for me throughout all those years; Wayne and Gloria Lum for coordinating the support committee after Yuri moved to California and for keeping it moving forward; my loyal friends and supporters: Patti Choy and Guy Kudo, the late Duke and Mary Choy, Kaori and Dean Kusakabe, Kazu Iijima, Jennifer Tsai, Joannie Chang, Ian and Liz Shiroma, Maggie Ho and Rick Sin, Emily Chan, Maya Choy-Sutton, Day Starr and Evergreen Chou, Little Horse, Rex Chen, Steve De Castro, Steve Yip, Diane Choy Fujimura, Norman Wong, Kwong Eng, Marsha Tajima, Eric Tang, Janice Pono, Siddhartha Joag, Ellen Guidone, Kit Yee Mui, Mai Nguyen, Eugene Carrington, Edmund Fong, Man Chui Leung, Alex Reyes, Joel Rivera, Josh Weiner, Karl Jagbandhansingh, Karen Lin, Ed Lin, Deidre Hamaguchi, Emily Woo Yamasaki, Minette Hinonangan, Tami Payne, Stan Nishimura, Tony Nguyen, Lisa Edmiston, Kevin Ching, April Parker, Kathy Bruce, Xuan Thao Nguyen, Eric Hill, Bobby Yan, Pat Saunders, Rick Taira, Nam Joon Kim, Ching Ching Ni, Masako Tamura, Ken Kurihara, Joanne Kim, Christina Lee, Lailan Huen, Doualy Xaykaothao, Liz Nakahara, Monica Ly, Cecilia Tsu, Julie Vongkhamchanh, my niece Fei Yeung, my ESL teacher Nancy Frederick, my family for standing by me all these years, my lawyers including Jaykumar Menon, Professor William E. Hellerstein of the Brooklyn Law School's Second Look Program, Professor Daniel S. Medwed of the University of Utah, Mary B. Pike, Pamela A. Armour, Laura Davis, Susan Tipograph, and investigator Joe Barry. In addition, the Center for Constitutional Rights in NYC, Project Reach, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Asian American Bar Association of New York, Asian Americans for Equality, Asian Law Caucus, APALA AFL-CIO NY, Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California, CAAAV-Organizing Asian Communities, Flushing Greens, NALC Br 294, Organization of Chinese Americans Ð National, Long Island, and NY Chapters, and last but not least, Consul Fu Weina, the Consul General, the Vice-Consul General and all the staff from the People's Republic of China Consulate in New York for following my case from the very beginning and trying to ensure my fair treatment in the U.S., and for working diligently and professionally to return me to Hong Kong instead of Fuchow so that I can be with my mom and family. Without all those wonderful souls, I wouldn't be home and free today. Thank you to the journalists and reporters who followed my case and for the fair treatment of me. The media's watchful eyes helped me greatly while my case was going through the court system. Thank you so very much! -- David
